Caughlinsett

37 mi | 4,089 ft | paved

Description

This is a pretty quick way to get 4,000 ft of climbing without having to leave town. With that though, it’s largely just residential riding but once you get into Somersett, there are some side roads that make you feel like you’re much further away from Reno than you are.

The highlight of the ride is definitely the Somersett neighborhood with its 3 Ogre climbs and random closed-to-cars connector paths. The only trick about this area is that the route meanders through many gated sub-neighborhoods but all feature sidewalks through so you won’t have to wait for cars to show up for the gates to open. If you do the shark fin climb below the Ogres you’ll have to hike a bike briefly to get from the bike path back into the neighborhood but it’s just a quick hike and definitely worth it for the private canyon descent.

I started the ride at Coffeebar – you could start at Walden’s as well but you’d get even less warmup. There is a restaurant and a bar up in Somersett as well if you’d like a mid ride snack or drink before descending back into town.
