About

Hi! Biggest Little Rides is an attempt to share some of my favorite routes with anyone looking to ride a bike in and around Reno, Nevada, the Biggest Little City. While Reno may not feature any bucket list rides, it has a lot of great ones that you can start right from downtown or within a 30 minute or so drive.

This site features long road rides, family bike path rides, beer cruises, but mainly the site is about gravel bike rides. Reno has tons of weird little fire roads and trail connectors that lend perfectly to fast rolling gravel and cyclocross bikes. You can link up paved neighborhood roads with random dirt trails to get some great city views or opt for plenty of dirt only fire road rides within a short drive.

But where are all the mountain bike rides??? Reno has great mountain biking options in the city and in the Truckee/Tahoe area but those trails are well documented on other mountain bike dedicated sites such as Trail Forks or Mtb Project so I will not cover those here.

Recommended

While I enjoy all rides on this site, I’ve labeled the best ones as Recommended. If you can, ride these ones first then work your way through the others.

Route Difficulty

For all routes I try to show the best and worst of the trail so pay close attention to the photos and elevation gain to see if it’s a trail for you. Here’s my guide to difficulty:

  • Beginner – Routes feature some bumps but no steep climbs or descents or anything really technical. The rider should be familiar with bike riding (potentially in traffic) but off-road riding skills are not required.
  • Intermediate – Routes feature much more climbing and technical bumps and off-camber surfaces than Beginner routes. The rider should be comfortable on dirt roads and riding their bike through bumpy and steep conditions.
  • Advanced – Routes are similar to Intermediate but are usually bigger in all respects (more climbing, rockier roads, a sketchy section or two) and may feature some steep mountain bike style descents.
  • Adventure – These are usually restricted to gravel and bikepacking rides. If you see this it means you should be prepared for rougher riding and/or some potentially non-rideable sections where you’ll likely have to hike-a-bike. If the ride is on the site, it’s worth the inconveniences but just be prepared to unclip or slosh around in some sand.
