Virginia City Loop

73.6 miles | 4,487 ft | paved

Description

If you’re looking for a long fully paved road ride but want slightly less busy roads than those that lead up to Lake Tahoe, this is a good bet. It’s a mix of nice quiet roads and a well trafficked busy highway but it has a decent shoulder. There are plenty of stops along the way to break up the length including two Chocolate Nuggets, Shoe Tree brewery in Carson, and the best Tex Mex in Nevada at Cafe del Rio in Virginia City. Not a lot of shade so load up on sun screen.

highlights

  • Dropping into Washoe Valley
  • Margaritas at Cafe del Rio in VC

lowlights

  • Washoe Valley can be windy
  • Riding Highway 50 through Mound House

verdict

  • Recommended
  • Difficulty: Advanced (but only for the elevation gain)
